Sorry, but I don't see any answer to my inquiry in this reply. :(

The Desktop Notifications do not work for me either. I have it enabled in Gmail for emails and chat. When I got the banner where Chrome requested permission for the Desktop Notifications, I allowed it. It is listed to "Allow" in the Exceptions of Content Settings>Notifications (where it is set to ask when a site wants to show desktop notifications).
OS: Win7 Home Premium 64bit
Chrome ver: 8.0.552.237
Antivirus: MS Security Essentials

Nor here. It never asks for permission.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||EjhDev||1/29/11 8:51 AM|
For those of you that say it doesn't ask for permission go to Settings>General and go down to that point and click on the link that says click here to enable. It doesn't work for me either but that is how I got it to ask for permission. Hope someone gets it to work

|Re: Desktop notification not working||tmoncho||1/30/11 4:45 PM|
It's now working...sometimes. What is annoying is that the pop-up isn't visible long enough for me to click on the 'wrench' icon and then on settings....so I can't tweak the settings which may help at least with the visibility time of the pop-up.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||tmoncho||1/30/11 4:47 PM|
Oh well.....I finally acted fast enough to click on the settings when a pop-up appears. There is no way to adjust the visibility time....just some security settings. Meh.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||Timmmmaaahh||1/31/11 2:04 AM|
It used to work when I first installed it last week but after one reboot it stopped. Now I just keep getting an unclickable bar in Gmail that asks me to enable the notifications.
[Win XP SP2, Chrome portable 9.0.597.67]
|Re: Desktop notification not working||asrusch||1/31/11 11:52 AM|
I just spent the last hour troubleshooting this. I found that:
For the desktop notifications to work properly, you have to have your Gmail open in a tab in Chrome.
(Confirmed on the latest beta and dev builds on: Ubuntu 10.10, Mac OS 10.6.6, Windows Vista/7)
It does not have to be in focus (you can have it minimized/using another tab) but it must be loaded. If you don't, the desktop notifications won't come in.
In my opinion, the users should be notified of this requirement, possibly in italics in the Notification settings section in Gmail settings.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||EjhDev||1/31/11 12:08 PM|
Asruch I think we all know that gmail does mention that in the learn more section... It doesn't work for me even if I am staring at the gmail inbox when I get a new message.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||asrusch||1/31/11 12:12 PM|
Nowhere on that page does it say Gmail must be loaded.
Did you check your Chrome Settings? Go to Chrome prefs, then "Under the Hood" tab, then "content settings" button (at the top), then "Notifications" section. I just set it to allow all sites to display notifications or you can choose the last option and add "mail.google.com" to the list.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||tmoncho||1/31/11 12:19 PM|
I always have Gmail on a pinned tab. The notifications are still working sporadically......but they seem to be working more often, and staying visible longer, so maybe they are tweaking it as they get feedback. Most reliable, ironically, are the notifications for posts on this forum. Go figure.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||EjhDev||1/31/11 12:36 PM|
Sorry then I was wrong... Unfortunately at the moment my computer is having BSOD problems I will try what you suggested when I get it fixed. Yesterday computer is fine today fine for a while then BSOD... Not good.

|Re: Desktop notification not working||Jeremiah.L.Burns||2/4/11 1:26 AM|
Not working here. Pinned GMail tab as well.
Chrome: 9.0.597.86 beta
OS: Win XP Pro Sp3Notification Exception: https://mail.google.com
|Re: Desktop notification not working||Jeremiah.L.Burns||2/4/11 2:24 AM|
I got mine working by switching over to notifications for ALL mail rather than only for important mail. I wasn't getting any 'important' mail at the moment, so couldn't properly test.
Will try again later with 'important-only' switched on and see how it goes.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||artsretired||2/4/11 4:17 AM|
This is an example of the egotistical attitude of big corporations and their programmers. I only learned of the new feature by accessing my gmail account. I was never clearly given a choice for notifications. The new feature had been added to my account and TURNED ON. I finally found the instruction about settings to turn notification off and I did so. IT DID NOT WORK. Google said notifications were OFF but they were not. My GMAIL window is now loaded with tabs. When I calll up MAIL now, it takes forever to load it.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||Timmmmaaahh||2/4/11 5:48 AM|
Art, it looks like your problem isn't related to Gmail but to your system. It's ironic anyhow: you're trying to turn it off while it's on and we're trying to turn it on while it's off, hah! It's most unlikely that Google will turn on stuff without asking/notifying you. Didn't you get the message on top of your screen to ask you about turning notifications on? Perhaps you accidentally clicked it?
|Re: Desktop notification not working||Timmmmaaahh||2/4/11 5:51 AM|
Oh, and what do you mean with "My GMAIL window is now loaded with tabs"?
Do you mean you're getting popups notifying of new mail while the Gmail tab is focussed?
(sorry about re-posting, can't seem to edit on here)
|Re: Desktop notification not working||Steve4||2/4/11 7:22 PM|
Welp, not working for me either. Find it rather incredible with such an obvious popular addon, that "we" don't have a resolution.....
|Re: Desktop notification not working||bobertf||2/5/11 9:43 AM|
Maybe this will help. I'm not sure if all the steps I describe are necessary.
I would get the chat notifications for some reason, but not the email ones. This is despite the fact that I never was able to give mail.google.com desktop notification permission. I clicked the wrench in the corner of a chat notification and selected the option to enable desktop notifications from the site. (If you click the wrench again, the option says 'Disable', implying that it somehow let some notifications by without permission.)
I did some testing to see if emails would work. It doesn't appear to work when sending from the same email address (say, from a phone), whether it's marked important or not. I closed the Gmail tab and opened a new one and that still didn't work, so I sent from a separate email address in an incognito window and it worked just fine, both when the option is set to all email or important-only.
This is on another machine than the one I mentioned in the post above, but most of the details are the same except OS and Chrome version.
OS: Ubuntu 10.10
Chrome version: 9.0.597.83 beta
I'll try it on my other machine later and see if I can replicate it.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||Steve4||2/5/11 9:59 AM|
The new mail display notice just worked for the first time about an hour ago and I haven't made any changes since "turning it on" a week ago. Weird or what. The display sure doesn't stay up very long, couple of seconds...what's with that? Sigh... The Google Mail Checker Plus extension is 100x better, so guess I'm not going to worry about it; you'd think google would have done a better job of implementing it...oh well. Enjoy your weekend.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||bobertf||2/5/11 10:50 AM|
It works on my Chrome OS machine. Mail.google.com shows up under permissions already. I'm not sure if this is something that syncs with Chrome Sync or what, though.
Also the notifications show up for me and stay there until I click on them.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||tereda||2/7/11 8:03 AM|
I turned on desktop notification, and now cannot get the chat to work. I think it must me some firewall that got activated.
I have no Idea what to do. Google allways does this on the other hand - with every new feature there is a period of a few weeks that it doesn't work and later they get it fixed. I'm not sure if this can be fixed from their side, I just installed win7, chat was working perfectly with notifications on winxp, why did the chat stop when I turned on notifications on win7 is what I canot understand. Its really frustrating with little problems like that.
|Re: Desktop notification not working||Timmmmaaahh||2/10/11 3:48 AM|
Okay, notifications seem to be working now. I just went to my (general) settings and had to click "" instead of clicking on the one that keeps popping up on top of the screen. The nuisance now is that I have to do this every single time I restart Chrome, whether in Incognito or not )-:
