|Move Mail From One Gmail Account to Another||messleftbehind||5/23/09 7:46 PM|
I created my first Gmail account in middle school and I am still currently using it after all of these years. However, now that I am in college and am working for a major corporation, this account isn't exactly professional enough to use. Over the years, I have accumulated mass amounts of emails that I would like to save with all of the same date, time, and sender information. I have created a new, more professional, Gmail account and would like to move all of these emails to my new account. I have tried Mail Fetcher, but this has failed on me for reasons I am unaware of. I have tried to troubleshoot it using methods and tactics from Gmail Help, but none of these attempts have been successful. I would really like to get rid of this Gmail account and start using my new account as my primary account. If anyone can help me with this, it would be much appreciated.

How to Move Mail From One Gmail Account to Another (Based on windows XP computer)
I just did and it went OK. This is how I did it (At least as far as remember, so if something doesn't work out, let me know):
Step-1 Go to your existing gmail account. Delete all the emails you donot need. (This is good opportunity to clean the rubbish out)
Step-2 In settings/accounts_and_import delete eventual extra accounts under 'check mail under pop3'
Step-3 go to settings/labs and enable 'Filter import/export'
Step-4 go to settings/filters and export your filters. (Later you import them in your new gmail account)
Step-5 go to settings/forwarding and pop/imap. Disable imap. Enable pop.
Step-6 Clean out your contacts and export them.
Step-7 Create your new Gmail account.
Step-8 Go to settings and set up your basic info under tab General.
Step-9 Go to settings/labels and create the label IMPORT.
Step-10 Go to settings/filters and set a filter that all email from your old gmail account will be labelled 'import'
Step-11 goto settings/forwarding and pop/imap. Disable Imap - Enable POP
Step-12 set up mail fetching as explained in http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=21289. (you fetch your old emails with pop. Not imap).
NOTE : when your gmail addr starts fetching the emails from your old email addr. it can take a lot of time. There is an option to follow the progress. But don't worry just let it run. I think you can even close gmail and go sleep, it continues fetching the emails. It can take long time. But don't worry.
TIP : count in your old gmail addr how many emails you have and compare later with the amount of emails in your new email account after all is fetched. If all OK, then you can disable the mail fetching, (And enable imap if you like)
Step-13 In settings/chat-webclips-labs-themes you can configure what you like.
Step-14 Import your filters
Step-15 Import your contacts (Foto's are lost. You have to attach again)
Step-16 finish configuring gmail like you want it.
Now you transferred all to your new gmail account. But don't forget that under your old gmail account you also might have configured google bookmarks / reader / blog / igoogle / web-albums etc etc. All these settings and data maybe need to be transferred to your new gmail as well. But that should be no problem. Google bookmarks you can export, but not directly import into your new gmail. First import into your browser, then import into your new gmail account. Google picasa web albums you can import via picasa3 on your computer. Works fantastic. Even the covers, captions are copied as well. After that create new picasa web album account under new gmail account, and then upload the webalbums via picasa3 on your computer to your newly created webalbum address.
Check carefully everything before you delete your old email account. There is NO way back once deleted.
Another thing not to forget. Most probably you signed up at many websites , internetbanking accounts, forums, newspaper sites etc under your old gmail account. All these websites, companies etc you have to change your registered email addr to your new gmail addr. Some are simple to change under 'my account' at their websites. Some you cannot change. So check all these accounts carefully before you delete your old gmail account.

thanks alot Orientix! you saved my life!

This would help if my Gmail accounts would have the "Accounts and Import" tab. Gmail hasn't exactly rolled it out to ALL accounts yet.

"TIP : count in your old gmail addr how many emails you have and compare later with the amount of emails in your new email account after all is fetched. POP3 import seems like the wrong way to do this, as GMails POP3 support only fetches things in the inbox if I recall correctly; additionally, it won't preserve my filters and tag structure that I've built up over the years.
It seems GMail's import wizard thing for other email services will not accept GMail addresses. Whether this is a deliberate design choice or an oversight, I don't know, but I'm willing to bet it's a deliberate design choice since the error was specific about "another GMail account." I hope they rethink this if that is the case, since there are valid reasons to want to port your GMail address over. I'm heading out into the professional/academic world, and I still have a username that reflects my mindset when I was 14 :P I have a more professional username nabbed (first.mid.last) but I don't want to lose all that I've built up in my other account. Has a better solution come around yet?

Oh, and of course, as was mentioned by the person suggesting it, this still wouldn't cover other services. Google Reader isn't the end of the world, since I can just export OPML from it, if memory serves. I also have a Google Voice beta account and a number of other services. (I basically live on Google ;) ) It would be really nice if Google would provide away to just reassociate the account info with a different username.

I also "live" on google. But when migrating to a new Google account it was not such a big step for me because in Gmail I simply didnot have so many emails, and I also didnot yet configur many other google services.
Why I didnot have so many emails : because I delete all the emails which are not neccessary to keep. I know, Google offer you the opportunity to keep all your emails. But that doesnot mean I should follow that. So even now, my Gmail doesnot contain thousands of emails. Why should it ?
If you have 1000's of emails then just keep the important ones, like payment proofs, regkeys for software you bought a.s.o. Then delete all the other emails e.g. older than 1/12008. Sure, maybe in the coming year you will regret that 2 or 3 emails or even few more are gone. Sowhat ? Its not the end of the world. How many times do you read old emails from years ago ? Never !
Most important is your contactbook. Make that up to date and use the notes field to enter some info. Then export/import/reorganize/inform your contacts your new email account.
The other services, create again in the new Google account.
The old Gmail account just keep it a while. If something still comes in you can inform them your new email account. I also still have my old email account. But now I think I donot receive anymore emails in it, so I will delete it in this month.
