|Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||DaveDiLorenzo||5/29/09 9:17 AM|
Is there any way to share contacts/groups between two gmail accounts without exporting/importing to/from .csv, so that contacts could remain in sync and groups would be maintained?
From what I've read here it seems the answer is no. If that's true, any idea if google is planning on adding it as a feature in the future?

I manage a small team of web developers collaborating remotely from different countries. We have been looking for a neat way to organize and synchronize our team's shared conversations, contacts, calendars, tasks, bookmarks, and RSS feeds. We couldn't find one simple way to do it. We experimented with Google's Apps and Apple's MobileMe. Neither one offers a complete way to share mentioned data with multiple user accounts. With Google one would have to import and export contacts constantly to keep his address book updated. This approach cannot save one's time and energy. With MobileMe one can share a complete Address Book, in other words, have other MobileMe users subscribe to Address Book. Unfortunately, one might not want to share certain personal entries with, say, coworkers. Not exactly useful, this solution. I mean, of course, they are useful. Both. On the single user level. Even with all the synchronization capabilities across multiple devices. We live our lives not isolated from one another today, rather, deeply engaged in shared information spaces. That calls for even more flexible information sharing solution than what's already offered by Apple and Google. I have watched the Google Wave introduction, and I have many hopes for that. However, its release date has not been announced, and one can't consider it as available solution.

If there ever is a way to do it, I would really appreciate it. I use the contact groups to create nifty email distribution lists for multiple organizations (PTSA, Scouts, Church, etc). When my term of office is up I would love to "share" the list with another gmail user like we do Google Docs. At that point they would take over so keeping both lists in sync wouldn't be the issue for me. I would just like to save the next person all that typing in. I guess the real issue might be that import/export intimidates me.
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||JohnW2||10/7/09 12:55 PM|
@ RosellenK - in your case I think that's fairly easy to achieve.
All you need to do (at the appropriate time) is to 'Export' your Contacts details: it'll come out in a .csv file format which you can then edit in Excel.
This will enable you to remove your own "private " entries, leaving just the ones you want to pass on in the file. Then your successor simply Imports that file, and they have all the details without re-entering them.
Hope that helps!!
Let us know if that achieves your "aim" .....!

you can use our shared contacts app to share your contacts. Works with Premier and Standard edition + regular GMail accounts.
Here is a screencast how to install the free trial for your Google Apps domain:

.... but please be aware that this (Non-Google) Shared Contacts service costs $50/yr for small business - up to $200/yr for large business!!
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||keith.duff||12/19/09 5:34 AM|
I would like to see a shared contact option set up just like shared calendars - where I can invite others to share a contact list (or group, I suppose) and give rights to just read or read/write.
I would use this in two ways:
1) I have a personal gmail account and a google apps account. I have to manually keep both contact lists updated - I wish I could update one and it would auto update the other (or in this case, update one and that is the one both use)
2) In Google Apps, I have 6 people who all need access to the same contacts. Just like above, when a change is made in one, I have to manually change the other 5. Real pain. In things like MS Exchange, this is considered a global address book.
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||Mihir Meghani||1/16/10 2:06 PM|
I echo comments by others that a shared address book that could be shared with other Gmail users or Google Apps users would be extremely helpful. Alternative, if one address books could automatically sync with another address book, that would be helpful. I am a leader in a non-profit which uses Google Apps, but share many of the contacts with my Gmail address. Most importantly, I need all my contacts synced with my Blackberry, so I put them all into my Google Apps address book. However, it is a pain that I have to constantly update my personal Gmail contact list as the 2 contacts lists do not sync.
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||JohnW2||1/17/10 4:12 AM|
I'd suggest you look at Soocial for your sync-ing.
Although Google Apps have many really useful features for sharing data, it hasn't got to Address books yet!

It's easy to sync GoogleContacts with a Blackberry - just install the Google Sync App on your Blackberry. This will also Sync you Blackberry Calander with Google Calander if you like.

|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||somebodyelse04||3/2/10 7:35 PM|
Google Synce just started to support two way sync for the Blackberry Enterprise server. Before it was only one way.
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||somebodyelse04||3/2/10 7:54 PM|
I will try to be very specific about the need for Contact sync between different Google Account holders:
1. Under same domain (Google Apps): have a Global Address list published by e.g. Admin/IT Department: Google Apps Supports this today
2. Under same Domain: Have Contact folders where users can add, edit, but not delete contacts (Admin can set full right or read only right as default to, but change right to individuals in addition). User decide for themselves who needs to be there. The problem here is that there needs to be a full audit trail so Administrator can change back bad user edits. It would be very useful if all edits e.g. also got populated in the Notes field (bellow a certain machine format line, with time stamp and who changed it. This would make it possible for users to find e.g. an old number, even if someone deleted that number by mistake.
3. Same functionality as the two above even between Google Apps and gmail acounts not under the same domain
4. It would be very useful to be able to sync with a LDAP server (many companies still need to use an LDAP server for all kinds of things, even if they go over to Google Apps)
5 Should be able to publicly advertise (and/or by sending invites, espesially in cases where restricted services is not publicly advertised on purpise) contact lists so people with gmail, Google Apps or other compliant services, can request to be able to sync with it (little similar to what one can do with Calendar (Useful Calendars) today, but primarily a company/name search, that then shows what servies this person is advertising public or restricted (Contacts, Calendar, Groups, etc.).
May be all this is Google Wave??
Any other features
neededneeded on the contact sharing side you guys think?
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||lucy.magill||3/25/10 9:10 AM|
I'm fairly new to gmail and am wondering if there has been any progress regarding sharing address books among other people in my organization. This is really a problem for us right now. I have some 300 addresses that I need to share with 7 other people.
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||LarryInMazatlan||5/6/10 12:32 PM|
I also wish Gmail would have the option of a sharable address book, but...
Right now the option i've found that does work to synchronize contacts across various gmail accounts is the Zindus addon for Thunderbird. All it requires is the gmail address and password of as many gmail accounts as you like, and it will create an aggregated list of all the contacts from the different accounts, and maintain all the accounts synchronized with that combined list.
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||LarryInMazatlan||5/6/10 12:36 PM|
Whoops, i forgot to mention,
I haven't tested it yet, but the Zimbra desktop email client also promises to synchronize contacts across multiple gmail and yahoo accounts - and not just contacts, but also calendars, tasks, etc.
Right now i just needed contacts, and the Zindus addon works for the Thunderbird email that I was already using, so I didn't want to waste any more time checking other options.
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||Marrz||12/7/10 7:21 PM|
I'd like to echo the need to share contacts. I am probably at the most basic level of need for this, but I still place a pretty high value on it. We, my wife and I, each have a gmail account. We have two groups of contacts that I find myself exporting/importing to sync on a semi-regular basis. I would really appreciate the ability to share these contacts in a similar way to Google Calendars.
I'd like to add, that with the ever growing popularity of Android, and smart phones in general this need will only grow. As more of my family members purchase smart phones there will be more calendars and contacts to share.
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||Bfullerine||12/27/10 3:39 PM|
I would like to see what the status is on this one? I'm sure that there are many families out there that would love to share their contact lists...at least the parents would. It would be very helpful. Constantly importing and exporting contact lists is so "old school". Please update us on if this option will or will not be available. Or...should we look for a third party application?
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||JohnW2||12/28/10 1:55 AM|
Soocial is still your best option (see earlier in this thread).
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||karin.ciano||1/5/11 7:40 PM|
I'm new to the forum but it appears the problem I'm having has been around for awhile. I have several gmail accounts (business, personal, volunteer) and an HTC Droid Incredible phone. The phone manages to sync my contacts across all accounts - but when I'm on the computer, I find myself forwarding emails to my other accounts and manually copying addresses I need from one account to the other (sorry folks, editing CSV files and Excel are not my thing). Wouldn't it be nice if there was a way to click a button when I'm looking at a contact and say, "share with myother...@gmail.com," or better yet, to have one master contact list for all accounts. I need something that is fewer steps, fewer programs, not more. Thanks!
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||wyt168||1/7/11 11:27 AM|
Status on this feature?!
I really want this feature!
Also, is there a way in this forum to, either:
1. move a posting to the top of the thread that is deemed a "sticky" by most of the people so we can get the most recent, important update up in the front?
or, at least,
2. allow the postings to be displayed in reverse chronicle order?
I know, I know, you can click the "last" button if there is more than 1 pages of postings, but still it is not reverse chrono order!
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||JohnW2||1/7/11 11:52 AM|
Status - no change (and somewhat unlikely to be).
1) No, only Google staff can create 'stickies' at the top of the forum pages
2) No, there's no way of sorting the postings either.

This seems like a great feature if your whole family is on Gmail, and a nice opportunity for Google to market Gmail to new users "Get your wife off Yahoo Mail, and you can share contacts with her!"

|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||JohnW2||2/14/11 1:07 PM|
Google provided a way to achieve it right from the very start.
You Export the Contacts data from one account (as a CSV file) and then Import it into any others. (Granted it's not terribly user-friendly, but it works!).
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||wreckcreations||2/22/11 7:41 AM|
John W2 - i think that this is not what everyone, including myself is asking for - we are asking for an automatic sync between contacts, so that you do not have to export and then import every time you add a contact to one account that everyone has. Currently in my office we have to email a new contact file to someone every time we add a new customer (which is VERY annoying and time consuming.)
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||JohnW2||2/22/11 8:09 AM|
@wreckcreations - Gmail is a service for personal e-mail usage, and as such it perhaps sees no reason to devote effort into doing something that "normal users" would rarely need!
However, Business users (who, incidentally are obliged to be using Google Apps accounts, which come with their own domain) will have an Administrator who should work this out. I know it is done in large companies (most of the big organisations which have moved over to using Google Apps have this, so it must be do-able!) but as a humble Gmail user it is outside of my personal experience.
Maybe an enquiry in the Google Apps Help Forum (rather than this Gmail Help forum) would elicit a suitable solution.
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||OperaMasterRace||3/22/11 6:28 PM|
This is a joke that Google apps dosnt have the option for a global set of contacts to sync up between users.
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||Marrz||4/8/11 11:07 AM|
@ John W2. This is a feature that "normal users" need, and would really use. My wife and I both use gmail at home and on our smart phones we have many contacts we would like to share across our two gmail accounts. Add to our situation a couple of kids with phones and the need is even greater.
It's no different then a small office really. Every new sports team my son plays on brings different contacts that will need to be added to two accounts.
Simply being able to share a group or two across two or more accounts is the easiest solution. Same as sharing a calender.
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||JohnW2||4/9/11 4:18 AM|
@Marrz - I have no doubt that it would be really useful to people like yourself! Quite why Google programmers haven't provided the facility within Gmail is not something I have any knowledge of. The simple fact of the matter is that they haven't yet provided that functionality - except by the use of Import/Export facility within Contacts.
Since they haven't provided it, other programming sources outside of Google have - and Soocial is one of those services.
Remember I'm but a user like yourself: I have no magic wand to whistle up such features or any closer contact with Google than you do via the use of the Suggestions page
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||aprylmcdowell1||5/4/11 7:28 AM|
@JohnW2 This service of sharing contacts is probably wanted by most individuals that are sharing their calendar. This is something that is greatly wanted and needed. I think that is why you are seeing so many post on it.
You know I am a real estate investor who has an real estate agent to show my properties when I am not in town. The funny thing is I told my agent to get a gmail account so that I can share my calendar and contacts with him. I shared my calendar and then I started looking all over the place (settings, help, forum, etc.) for sharing contacts but I didn't see it. I assumed that google had this service because it is so basic. And now I found this forum that tells me...it really isn't needed for the average folk. I can't believe it is not even with the business version. It is 2011 everything syncs!!! Why would anyone want to download a file and then send it for every contact, it would be better to just send it to them by email..Sheesh :)
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||JohnW2||5/4/11 4:43 PM|
@aprylmcdowell1 - sharing Calendars and sharing Contacts are not really the same thing.
And (for the sake of argument) nor is a Gmail account the same as a Google Apps account.
Google Apps accounts do provide for Shared Contacts amongst the members of the account (controlled by the domain Admin) and sharing Calendars is done via the Calendars interface itself.
But there is no facility provided for sync-ing two completely unrelated Gmail accounts - whether this is 2011 or otherwise.
Please remember, Gmail accounts are intended for purely 'personal' purposes, and not for business users. I'd venture to suggest that you're trying to use yours for the latter, even though it is strictly your personal account.

I have two simple GMail accounts and would like to copy all my contacts from the primary to the secondary one.
I know this can be done using the CSV Export/Import method.
My question is: Will this preserve any photos I have assigned to my contacts? If not, is there any way to do this?
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||JohnW2||5/5/11 3:23 PM|
@zambir - No, and you could try http://floreysoftsharedcontacts.appspot.com who offer a free service (as stated in one of the above postings).

|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||winefarmer||5/9/11 9:51 AM|
The simple answer is that there is a buck to be made on sharing contacts. That is why they force you to join Google apps even if you are an individual that wants to use these services. My wife and I share a calander and would love to be able to share contacts. We hardly need our own domain!
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||winefarmer||5/9/11 9:52 AM|
PLEASE let us share gmail contacts the way we share the calendar!
|Re: Sharing contacts/groups between two gmail accounts||Stef G-Apps||5/11/11 10:53 PM|
After trying several application, I must admit that the simplest, the fastest and more efficient is Gmail Shared Contacts : With this app, you can share contacts and adress books like you share Google docs or Google calendars.
The great thing is that your user don't have to use an additional application : they can share and update contacts using Google Contacts Manager :
Their website is http://www.gmailsharedcontacts.com
