Now, granted, I can still accomplish this, but I hate always having to go into the mail app to resend each message from the outbox.

If I do send one like that and forget about it

I just got off the phone with Apple support.  I can send via other email accounts, including my work Exchange account, a Yahoo account, and my own IMAP account. They conclude it is a GMail-specific problem.
