Sorry! Because you were logged into many different Google services, we weren't able to finish logging you out. You are still logged into services in the following domains. If you'd like us to keep trying to sign you out of these domains, click on the "Keep trying" button.
This is a copy and paste of the message I get, not that I'm actually logged into anything. Why???
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||WB Ellis||12/3/10 11:00 PM|
I don't know - but, sign me up for wanting an answer.
I can't access my gmail - from 4 different computers, and 3 different browsers (Chrome, IE & Firefox)
When I to sign out, I get the google.iq crap.
I love it when developers take something that works really well - and complicate it to the point of non-functionality....

Dino - are you working in Iraq?
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||ryan412||12/4/10 12:18 AM|
Same issue here. I'm in Iraq. On a government network so none of this "reset router" bs is an option.
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||dedeman||12/4/10 12:23 AM|
I am having difficulty with trusted sites, in that my computer is opening 'current site is 'google.iq' trusted site is 'google.com'. Then I am returned to the login screen again.
I am in Iraq, and I see the Iraq TLD is .iq. I have ideas as to what is happening, but I can't be sure, or can't seem to fix it. I think that GMail thinks I am in Iraq, and as such, won't allow me to open my .com account. Maybe.

same story.... in iraq with no gmail......... whats going on google ?! it was working yesterday......

Just a heads up from Angola (using a remote ISP from Germany). The problem (and symptoms) are not isolated to Iraq. While I am frustrated with the circumstances I do take solace in that my original fear was that my account had been hijacked. You'd think the software engineers over at Google would have heard of Beta Testing?
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||Ridic||12/4/10 2:09 AM|
Looks like the good folks over at Google are under the impression nothing is wrong (Or that they fixed it last night)
I've already sent an error report this morning at around 06:30 (GMT +1)... Looks like we may be stuck until tomorrow morning earliest Monday, latest. That is assuming they let software engineers go home when only ".03%" of the user group is affected :p
*inarticulate grumbling with profanity thrown in for kicks*
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||WB Ellis||12/4/10 2:53 AM|
RE: You'd think the software engineers over at Google would have heard of Beta Testing?
I wish they would hear of "If it ain't broke don't go f^(%!#& fixing it!"
In the last 2 years, Google has taken a fine set of services and products (gMail, Chrome, and Google Search specifically) and improved them to the point of instability and uselessness.
Pretty soon, anything with the Google branding is going to be as cumbersome, bloated and useless as Micro$oft's crap.
And that's just... sad.
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||Ridic||12/4/10 3:26 AM|
Couldn't agree more.
Had an old boss who loved to say "The more complex an organism is the more prone it is to extinction." had more than one debate about that statement but in the end he won me over. Eventually every corporation, government, even life forms become so complex that the most minor fault becomes a critical failure.

No, last I was in Iraq was 2008 (it sucks fighting Israeli proxy wars so that Bankers and Weapons manufactures can rape the American treasury of it's people's money).
I'd never had problems up until yesterday. This morning it still didn't work, but I did send a password recovery to a very OLD yahoo account. Somehow I remembered the password despite not using it since I got gmail.
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||john.hembree||12/4/10 5:26 AM|
It's not only in Iraq but in Afghanistan as well. I get the same thing all of you are getting. Can't access my mail, but i'm signed in and when I try to signout I'm still logged into the google.iq. Everything was working fine last night.
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||eric.rosser||12/4/10 6:08 AM|
I am in Iraq. I'm having the same issue. The last two days I have been able to log in, then I get re-routed to an error page. From there I could go back to Google, then click gmail and it would let me in. Today I cannot sign in.
Can you fix this Google?

Not in Iraq... same issue. However my wife can login and access her gmail on my computer so it's only my account that has the problem.

It might be helpful to know where you are...
...not just where you are not.
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||WB Ellis||12/4/10 9:12 AM|
I think I've made what might be a significant observation:
My computer in my living quarters is still signed into gmail. This is most likely due to the fact that when I left for work this morning, I did not sign out, I simply closed the browser and shut the computer down.
So, when I restarted the computer, opened the browser, and went to gmail - it loaded right up.
Then, what I noticed, was the fact that I was not logged in @ www.google.com.
Further testing also shows this problem to affect Google Docs.
So, it seems that Google has inadvertently - or by design - broken the Single Sign On of the Google Universe...
Can anyone else check this?
I stress again - remoting to my server in the States - all functions work flawlessly. I can sign in / out without issue on both Chrome and IE8.
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||eric.rosser||12/4/10 9:21 AM|
I am able to sign in w/o issue in the MWR and USO. I only have the problem when using an Iraqi ISP.
I can also remote to CONUS and log in without a problem.
It is one of the servers that the login bounces off of when using my ISP in Iraq. That is where the redirect starts and sends me into never-never land.
I never leave myself logged into multiple computers. My computer in my living quarters is off when I leave for work. I log off when I am at work. And I log off after using shared computers.
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||eaglesix.sw||12/4/10 9:33 AM|
I am in Iraq. it has been doing this all day, from several computers. When can the men and women who are far from home expect it to be fixed!
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||WB Ellis||12/4/10 10:00 AM|
The MWR and USO use SPAWAR satellite links with teleports in Europe (usually Germany).
Therefor, those computers have a European presence, not Middle Eastern.
Europe is not suffering from this silliness, nor is the US.
You may not have noted in my previous post - my CHU computer was off. I did not sign out (thereby retaining the login cookie) - but, the computer was off (not sleep, not hibernate - OFF).
I do sign out of my work computer b/c google has locked me out of my account for 24 hours due to "suspicious activity" - of which being logged in from multiple computers is a known excuse.

|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||englertus||12/4/10 10:51 AM|
Hey WB Ellis, if you were paying attention to all the replies, then you would have noticed that one might suppose the issue was a result of being in Iraq. I was simply stating I was not in Iraq to clear that misperception. Again, you're most recent post says that the US is not "suffering from this silliness," and you are incorrect. I am in Virginia and suffering from the issue. And again if you were paying attention, my earlier post says that my wife can login to her gmail from my computer, so her account is not affected, but mine is.
Please review all replies before responding and stating incorrect facts which will only confuse others. As I'm sure others will reply following this post this issue is not limited to Iraq/Afghanistan, it is also affecting the US.

This Issue started to Happen in Dec,04 2010 .... I think it is a Pre-Launch of Google Iraq Services..
Check your account Settings for your Location ? Time zone..
I have the Issue Because I was in Iraq...
**The Problem is not with the Browser or the Machine**...It is with the Account itself....
the Problem started with me after deleting my cookies in IE9 & Firefox on 2 different machine...
But my Mac still having the Cookies stored so I can Access My Account!

aside from all the speculation and rhetoric, does anyone know how to fix this problem? I am also a servicemember deployed and I would like to be able to call home. Has anyone found a solution or at least a time frame for when this will be resolved?

I'll forward this discussion to a Google employee. I don't think they monitor the forum over the weekend, but I hope they can give us some pointers on Monday.

|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||MrEvan||12/4/10 3:06 PM|
Thanks for your reports on this issue. I'm sorry to hear about this frustrating problem you're dealing with. I'm not in the office, but wanted to chime in to see if I could help investigate and hopefully work to get to the bottom of this situation. First, I'd like to summarize what I've heard from you all to make sure I'm clear about what's going on. Secondly, I'd like to call your attention to a similar situation we saw reported on the forum recently. I put a bunch of questions in bold.
My understanding of the situation is as follows (please let me know if I'm mistaken about anything or if you have more to add):
-those of you experiencing this issue can't access your Gmail accounts
-when you sign out, you see the following error message and cannot log out:
"Sorry! Because you were logged into many different Google services, we weren't able to finish logging you out. You are still logged into services in the following domains. If you'd like us to keep trying to sign you out of these domains, click on the "Keep trying" button. google.iq" (could you please clarify which account you're signing out of and from where? does this apply just if you were successfully signed into your Gmail account)
-the issue persists across browsers and computers
-many of you are in Iraq, but there are also reports from Afghanistan, Angola (via a German ISP) and Virginia (do all of you outside of Iraq see google.iq error messages?); @DinoRiderz was in Iraq...but back in 2008
-for those of you in Iraq, is this only affecting Iraqi ISPs?
-the issue seems to have started in the last 24 hrs
-in @englertus' case, the problem affected some - but not all - accounts logged in on the same computer and browser
-@dedeman, can you please clarify what you mean by: "my computer is opening 'current site is 'google.iq' trusted site is 'google.com'. Then I am returned to the login screen again."?
-can you access google.com and sign into your Google account ok from google.com? can you access other Google services (e.g. docs.google.com) without signing in again? WB Ellis indicated single sign-in might not be working properly
-I've never been to Iraq and despite working at Google am not aware of whether or not google.iq is a legimitate url (I don't see it listed here: http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en) -- for those of you in Iraq, is that indeed a normal Google site for Iraq?
-mona.croissant on another thread reports that "If you use your alternate e-mail to reset your gmail password, you can get access. HOWEVER, once you log-out the problem will return." -- hacky approach and not ideal, but FYI for the meantime.
Now, for the similar situation that this reminds me of:
Back in October, we saw a similar issue in forum facing users in Canada, the UK, Australia, etc. who reported difficulties logging into their Gmail accounts, encountering strange re-directs, multiple password prompts, etc. Some people in the forum thought it was Google's problem, but that particular issue related to malware on routers (and perhaps some computers) that was interfering with users' access to certain Google sites on the internet. Since the issue was not a problem on Google's end, we advised users to run virus scans and perform factory resets on their routers, creating unique router username/password combos, as the malware may have been taking advantage of users with default settings .
@ryan412, I see that you're pointing out this may not be possible for folks on a government network, but for anyone who's able to reset their routers (and create a unique router username/password afterward), I'd be interested to know if that resolves the problem.
Sorry for the massive post :) Let's continue to keep the conversation going on this thread. To set proper expectations, I won't be able to monitor the thread constantly over the weekend, but I will continue to keep tabs...and want to get you back into your accounts and back in touch with your family and friends asap!
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||MrEvan||12/4/10 5:59 PM|
UPDATE: After further investigation, I believe this issue should now be resolved. Could you all please confirm whether or not you're still having issues?
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||mona.croissant||12/4/10 6:02 PM|
I do not purport to be in any way computer savvy, but I will attempt to address the things you have brought up.
I am able to access iGoogle and it shows me to be logged in. However, when I click the Gmail link it brings me to the password screen. Everytime I enter my password it returns me to the password screen. When I attempt to log OFF of iGoogle, I get the above referenced error regarding the google.iq.
I am in Iraq. I am currently on a government computer, but I haven't gotten off work to know if the problem persists elsewhere. I know it is affecting the Iraqi ISPs, I am not sure about the others.
I was unable to access ANY google accounts other than iGoogle. (i.e. my google Voice account did the same thing my gmail did).
Finally, I know that resetting the password is not the ideal way to address it, but for the meantime it is the only recourse for those of us deployed in a foreward area without other access. In addition, I doubt any malware would get onto our systems here, but even if it had, our IT and CompSec guys are 24/7 and we have already had them run a check. (Please believe that there are hundreds of soldiers here being affected by this issue, and they are not being quiet about it). For many of us here google voice is the only way they can call their loved one's thanks to the ability that is afforded them to call a cell from their computer.
In addition if it was malware, why can we get around it by resetting the password and logging in via the e-mail link sent?
I know that this is not your area and I am not trying to be rude in any way. You have no idea how grateful we servicemen and women are for the services that are provided by google. However, in the environment we exist in, a loss of access to something so relied upon is felt all the more. Mostly it's just hard to have the only access to our families cut off during those rare moments we can avail ourselves of the internet in the first place.
Thank you for your help and understanding. Forgive the long post.

Whatever you did, thank you. We seem to be able to log in fine now. From all of us soldiers here. You don't know what a kind and wonderful deed you have done for us and how we appreciate it.

I assure you, I was "paying attention".
At the time of your post that you accuse me of not paying attention - not one person had listed a location in the US that had been affected. That includes you. I do apologize for my lack of clairvoyance in reading your mind - but, walmart is fresh out of the pills that allow me to do that.
Countries that had been listed however (at that time), were Afghanistan, Angola, India, Iraq, and Lebanon. My last geography lesson (some 25 years ago) did not have VA anywhere close to that region of the world.
Again - let me apologize profusely for my inability to read your mind - and for having the temerity to state the obvious:
That we need to know where you were - not just where you were not.
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||WB Ellis||12/4/10 9:47 PM|
When I got up this morning, everything was working normally.
Thank you for your attention in this matter.
I would like to point out, however, I feel that Google is doing it's a client base a great disservice by not having a mechanism in place for reporting serious problems such as this.
All reports through the forums on this matter were summarily discounted for hours.
As more and more people use services like this as primary services - downtime is not acceptable. Especially when that "downtime" is created by someone improving a system that already works brilliantly - and doesn't need "improving".
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||dedeman||12/5/10 2:22 AM|
My account is working now, as well.
Never mind about the "trusted site" business I was mentioning earlier. It's a runaround I always have to allow access to, after hitting 'OK' 8 times. But that is an aside.
I appreciate your attention to this matter. Many thanks from us here in Iraq.
|Re: google.iq??? WTF is that and why can't I log out?||englertus||12/5/10 5:19 AM|
I accept your apology. Just try to be more careful.
If you review the posts, the part I wrote about my wife being able to get on gmail from my computer (while I am unable) completely discounts just about everything you wrote. So again, your apology is accepted, but please pay more attention to detail.

You can try to spin the discussion however you like, but the bottom line is you are just wrong. Context was not lacking in my original post. In my post, and I quote, "my wife can login and access her gmail on my computer so it's only my account that has the problem." This shows that location is irrelevant in the issue. And because location was irrelevant, there was no need for me to specify my location. I merely typed "Not in Iraq" as a direct reply to the previous post which said "In Iraq" to show the problem was not specific to Iraq. You are obviously one of those people that can't be wrong, so you try to ramble on about inconsequential things to attempt to convince yourself and others you're right. Just pay attention to detail and maybe next time you won't look like such an incorrect idiot.
