|Google chrome lag when entering url!||TheTerminator||9/26/09 7:47 AM|
When I browse within the page and simply click the links, type in searches, etc. Chrome is super fast. The problem is, when I type in an URL or click the homepage button, the program lags for several seconds before "noticing" that I typed something in or clicked the button. Is it a bug or is something wrong with my computer? Thanks!
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||wár17 §||9/26/09 8:45 AM|
Does the same occur with IE or another browser? I see a little delay, but not several seconds.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||Fenworth||9/26/09 2:26 PM|
This is also happening to me. I'm on the final (RTM) build of Windows 7 downloaded form TechNet Plus (so it's not a beta, just getting that out there). Google Chrome takes quite some time (about 3 to 4 seconds) to load ALL pages and will frequently seem to "freeze" when typing in any text box including the address bar. This issue occurs on ALL versions of Chrome (Stable, Beta, Dev). Changing to run Chrome in compatibility mode does nothing. This does not occur in Firefox or IE8.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||TheTerminator||9/27/09 8:10 AM|
Also, I know that my computer is completely free of viruses and spyware, and it only happens with Chrome, not IE or Firefox. I have DNS prefetching disabled, and I clear the DNS cache every now and then, which speeds it up slightly, but I am still experiencing the problem.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||Fenworth||10/21/09 10:13 PM|
Anyone figure out any solution to this. It's very annoying!
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||curdog||11/3/09 7:59 PM|
Same problem here. It happens when clicking links, opening pages in new tabs, typing, scrolling, etc. It's driving me crazy. I reinstalled, which seemed to fix the problem temporarily, but maybe it was just a fluke.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||jdemay||11/4/09 11:37 PM|
Using Windows 7 RTM, and I have the exact same issue. Going back to using Firefox 3.5. Click on links within Pages is very fast, entering URLs takes forever, it basically takes up to 20 secs for Chrome to notice that I have entered something.

Here is a discussion on slow reacting Chrome
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||stiucsib86||11/11/09 5:34 AM|
Whats your CPU architecture? 32 bit or 64 bit?
Found a solution to Google Chrome lag (3-4seconds) and Windows Live Messenger lag .
At least it works perfectly for me on my Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Accessories.
2. Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. (Important: Run as Administrator)
3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable
4. Restart computer. (Important: Restart)
The problem and solution is described in Microsoft KB Article 929868. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929868
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||tony.bombardo||12/3/09 7:21 AM|
hey Stiucsib86 - when you do this, does it STAY that way? I've tried doing it, and it seems like it always ends up getting slow again like that setting isn't sticking or something... it seems fast right away, and then i'll notice a while later that it's back to doing what it used to do....
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||Fenworth||12/3/09 8:24 PM|
I've tried Stiucsib86's method and while it does fix the problem for serveral days, it inevitably goes back to the original problem of ultra slowness and lagging. Can't anyone from Google shed some light onto this problem or are we in the minority?
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||tony.bombardo||12/3/09 8:37 PM|
yeah! just so google knows, I switched to safari (i know i know... ) and i'm not going back to chrome until we can get this fixed. I really like chrome, but this is ridiculous....
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||FollowingOz||12/12/09 12:40 PM|
It is a problem with windows 7 and not chrome specifically. It is caused by a memory drain that can be confirmed in the task manager. Look for a svcHost that is drawing 100MB+. Right, click and select go to services. Your looking for "SuperFetch" service. I'd just stop it and see if things improve, then disable it and restart the computer. It is a program that systematically loads more programs into memory over time. It is a new form of the tray icons we saw back with '98. So, disable "superfetch" and your computer and chrome will run better; because it's not caching crap randomly.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||tony.bombardo||12/12/09 1:11 PM|
interesting... I'll definately try that... would disabling the SuperFetch service cause any problems?

|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||tony.bombardo||12/12/09 1:19 PM|
hm. well thanks for your help. i'm not at my own computer right now so i'll have to wait to try it... do you know if that would have to be disabled all the time like that other "fix" talked about above, or does disabling it once keep it shut off indefinately?
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||FollowingOz||12/12/09 1:28 PM|
Right click on the service properties, use the drop down menu, select disable. The instant improvement should be very obvious. I better get a check from somebody for this one.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||tony.bombardo||12/12/09 3:59 PM|
stopping it didn't seem to do anything at all.... and I can't figure out how to do anything other than stop the service (but not disable completely)
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||tony.bombardo||12/12/09 4:01 PM|
strike that... figured out how to disable... still hasnt sped up chrome at all that i can see though...
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||tony.bombardo||12/12/09 4:08 PM|
restarted, i think its working... for now
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||FollowingOz||12/12/09 4:44 PM|
Clear the browsing history now that the service is disabled. It will take a while like usual, but you should be good to go afterwards.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||Fenworth||12/14/09 1:37 AM|
I tried the method of disabling Superfetch, clearing my cache, and restarting the computer. Once again Chrome sped up to normality for a day and is now back to being slow and laggy. Any other ideas?
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||jjc1988||12/17/09 1:01 PM|
I've tried all those things and none of it seems to be helping the lag issue. I'm currently typing this from *shudder* Internet Explorer, because the lag for Chrome is simply unbearable. Is there a way we can be notified that Google is working on fixing this issue?
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||Fenworth||12/20/09 7:18 PM|
Has anyone confirmed that this problem also occurs on 32-bit versions of Windows 7?
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||radioactivebee||1/6/10 4:30 AM|
This seems to be working for me. Quoting fourier1861:
"This has been frustrating me for months, but it seems to finally be fixed. Instant page loads and event responses, compared to 6-7 seconds before. Go to Tools | Options | Under the Hood | Change proxy settings | LAN Settings, then deselect "Automatically detect settings" checkbox."
It is worth a try.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||Fenworth||1/8/10 8:23 AM|
Yes, the problem 'appears' to be fixed. I'm using dev version 4.0.288.1 and pages are loading swiftly and efficiently.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||tony.bombardo||1/8/10 5:26 PM|
Hey Fenworth- How do i go about downloading the newest dev version? I am on the dev channel but it's never updated itself , or asked me to update, and it says it's on the most up to date version (4.0.249.03)
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||Fenworth||1/8/10 11:32 PM|
I went to http://www.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel and scrolled down until it showed the link for 'Dev channel' under Windows. Click to download and enjoy! I'm surprised your Chrome wasn't updating itself automatically. It should have been doing that, shouldn't it?

Mine takes a few minutes... It lags FOREVER.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||glasstumbler||3/5/10 1:48 PM|
I have the same problem with Chrome running on Windows XP. Always a lag of 30 secs. or more when entering url or search terms in the address line. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling but problem is still there. This problem just started happening a few days ago. Up until then, I have been happily using Chrome for almost a year. If I can't find quick fix, I will switch to Firefox.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||atitcombe||3/9/10 6:35 AM|
I have the same problem with chrome running on Windows 7 . When i reboot chrome it improves for a while but get slower and slower particularly with entering text on gmail (using chrome)- this started only in the last week or so. Same problem when using gmail offline, which i think is now integrated into the new gmail. May move to another browser soon unless i can get to the bottom of it.
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||BrianTurley||5/7/10 10:21 AM|
I'm running in to the same issue here and it just started a little over a week ago and only on one of my machines. Every 30 seconds or so I see lag when typing in any field, opening a new tab, or even mousing over a drop down menu. I was using the latest stable build when it started but then I uninstalled that and then installed the new beta that just came out. After about 15 - 20 minutes of use the lag started happening again. This isn't happening on any other machine or in any other browser.
Even as an IT guy at an MS gold certified shop, I'm a little ashamed to say that I've had to switch back to IE for the moment (although the Sharepoint integration in IE is kinda nice... I should try Chrome Frame on IE and test out Sharepoint, never thought of that).
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||BrianTurley||5/7/10 10:41 AM|
I win! Got it fixed pretty fast. Check out the popular answer here:
The relevant part that fixed it for me was
"AUTO DISCOVERYING PROXY: The "auto detect proxy" function of Win 7 may be causing lag for some users. To disable it, go to Wrench->Options->Under the Hood->Change Proxy Settings. Click "LAN settings" and uncheck "automatically detect settings". Additionally click "Settings" (if it's not grayed out) and uncheck "Automatically detect settings" here too. Hit OK until you get back to the browser. Test to see if the problem has gone away"
|Re: Google chrome lag when entering url!||23inhouse||8/27/11 7:56 PM|
Dear Chrome Team
Chrome is laggy. It has been getting worse and I can no longer tolerate it. I will return to using chrome when these issues are addressed.
The scroll is laggy, the url entry is laggy.
Basically this is how it goes. I'm the use, i don't wait. The computer works around my usage. If I want to type into the url bar, give the url bar 99% of the cpu time so that i get full responsiveness around what i'm doing. If there are old actions running, pause that and serve my needs right now.
This goes for scrolling too, if i move the scroll bar, stop processing everything pause all activity and move the page. Show me blank if it's blank, show me half loaded images, show me rendering errors, show me anything. Just make sure the the page moves around when i try to scroll the page.
I'm really looking forward to these issues being resolved.

23inhouse, you say you are a Chrome fanboy, but you did not troubleshoot.
Did you delete cache?
Did you disable extensions and flags?
Did you look at external programs interfering with Chrome?
No, you just gave up.
