Google Chrome 5.0.375.7 (Official Build 44408)
Windows 7 [32bit] / Windows XP [32bit]
When starting Chrome a message box propogates twice with the following message:
your preferences file is corrupt or invalid
OKing the message allows me to continue. Issue on two machines. Fixed on one by deleting all the Chrome files and reinstalling. Issue recurred after a few days.
Does anyone else have this issue?

I had this problem and fixed it just now. In C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default i found I had some .BAD files, specifically on the preferences file. Very quick and simple I restored a previous version of the chrome folder to set everything as it was a couple of days ago.
Problem solved all my extensions are back etc. Obvious downsides you lose any preference changes you have made since the restored version and it's a no go unless you have auto backups.
Hope that helps to anyone who comes across this again.

The above does not solve the problem, only temporarily reverts to a functional state. Eventually chrome will mess up the preferences file again. It is good to know that you can make backups, however. Regardless, google needs to look into this.

If you are annoyed by this problem and want to get it fixed in simplest way then open path
c:/documents and settings\administrator\local settings\application data\google\chrome\use data\
I recommend to uninstall Chrome first
Now if you are unable to delete the preference file
Go to the folder USER DATA which contains the preference file
Rename USER DATA folder to name "DELETE" or use any other random name to rename USER DATA folder in such a way that it doesn't affect next Chrome installation
Install Google Chrome again
Now this new installation will create a fresh folder USER DATA with Preference file of 9kb which will not be corrupt
Note: The corrupt file is not getting replaced during next installation, so I changed the folder "USER NAME" to name "XYZ" or "DELETE" or any random name. So on the next installation the folder USER DATA is created again with fresh preference file. Hope you understand the logic. This will fix the problem permanently but you might not be able to delete the old folder DELETE or XYZ or the old preference file inside it

this problem automatically goes away if you have been using the "Sync" feature under 'Personal Stuff" in Chrome Options. If you've got Chrome running on another computer (like, your work computer, for example) and something happens to your other copy elsewhere, you will notice that if the Preferences file becomes corrupted, Chrome will say you're not using Sync. Simply enable Sync again and all your preferences (Theme, Extensions, Bookmark Bar, Bookmarks, etc.) will be re-enabled on the Chrome instance you were having problems with.
For best results, log in to the computer where your Google Chrome instance is running fine first, and then go back to the instance where it is not and enable Sync.

It's good to know that there are some effective work-arounds, but this doesn't solve the original problem. These messages are from late 2010. Has Google really not found a way to fix this problem yet? I just had it happen to me and I'm using a recently (w/in 30 days) version of Chrome. Is there an application or extension that's causing it to happen? Something that I can avoid to prevent it happening in the future? I'm disappointed that Chrome hasn't fixed something as essential as keeping my settings on a local computer.

ok this same thing popped up for me but all I did was open Chrome again and it worked ... so Im unsure if I really have an issue to fix or not
|Re: your preferences file is corrupt or invalid||csrenner||9/22/11 3:23 PM|
Chrome build #14.0.835.186 m
I had this issue and did all the research with nothing working out.
What I did do is rename the "Preferences.BAD" & "Bookmarks.BAK" files w/o the ".BAD" & ".BAK" respectively. I then right-clicked "Preferences," went down to "Properties," then clicked the "Previous Versions" tab. It will do a quick search & turn up backed-up copies of that file. Select the backup that you know worked last, then click "Restore." After closing out of that window, do the same restoration for "Bookmarks."
I don't know if you have to use the same date for the backups, but I did. After you restore both files to previous working conditions, everything should be back to how it was, except for any changes you may have made after that backup copy. Hope this helps! I know I took a giant sigh of relief!!!

FOUND AN EASY WAY TO SOLVE IT, Just go to App Data folder, find the folder for google chrome, and delete the folder called "Default" then just restart chrome and everything will work perfectly

i tried delete the default thing...it doesn't work
|Re: your preferences file is corrupt or invalid||Krazielegs||9/10/13 10:50 PM|
I don't know if your still having the problem or not, but I also deleted the "default" folder under
"%appdata%" "Local" "Google" "Chrome" "User Data" "Default" and had the same error. What I did to fix it was to just delete the folder "Google" under "%appdata%" "Local". Restart Chrome and should come right up, just sign in and your good to go.

I got similar issue upon setting Kaspersky security to create a virtual container. Wiped out all Extensions, PITA. I config-ed a bit more and restarted a few times and no more error msg, but I had to install all plug-ins again.

I think this problem occurs when you download "SpeedBit Video Accelerator" or/ and you change your theme.
|Re: your preferences file is corrupt or invalid||startmeup1||10/26/13 8:01 AM|
I had thee same problem. I downloaded a new Chrome< still nothing. Then simply I logged in and activated the sync and in a matter of a couple of minutes, mine was restored and appeared to be working fine. Everything is back the way I had it in Chrome now.

I did this and it did not work.
|Re: your preferences file is corrupt or invalid||Krazielegs||11/21/13 1:28 PM|
What did you do exactly? Everything listed here as a fix? And none of it worked?
|Re: your preferences file is corrupt or invalid||Apmbabiestoo||11/21/13 2:39 PM|
No specifically I deleted profile and added a new one.
I did however find one that worked (suggested by Adam Alshamari 11-17-12). I went into AppData and deleted the default folder ( make sure u close ur browser first otherwise everything won't del) and that seamed to solve my issue so far I have yet to close and reopen the browser since the deletion.
