I worked it out. I'm guessing that you have a custom theme installed on your Google Chrome.
If you do, you need to revert back to the default theme (click on the screwdriver, then 'options', then 'Personal Stuff', and click 'Reset to default theme') and then hover over the 'Apps' on your new tab page and click the 'x' that appears on the right. It should disappear.
But you're going to lose your theme, so you're going to have to reinstall it when you've finished.

You just need to right click on the apps and click "Uninstall", so you won't lose anything for your things, except the app the you do not want.

Someone above said it's probably due to a "custome theme" which it is not. It's simply the Google Chrome apps you've installed. If you want to remove one of the apps, right-click and select "remove"

its not a custom thing. perhaps i'm just misunderstanding the instructions or not seeing something on my screen.
the new tab default-view is the 'Apps' portion. i have no custom anything (except for some minor settings tweaks) and i cant figure out how to turn this off.

I am also baffled by this. I want desperately to get rid of it. The only way I could do it was to unistall Chrome and reinstall the most recent non-beta version. Unfortunately it came back later when it automatically updated to the latest version. It's extremely annoying. I can't believe that Google took this option away from us. In the last versions we could turn it off and on at will. Are they trying to force it down our throats?

You cannot remove the Apps section, but you can switch over to the Most visited section using the left arrow on the side of the page, or by clicking Most visited in the grey bar at the bottom of the page.

I am having a problem with uninstalling the apps on Google Chrome (version 15.0.874.121 m). I have "uninstalled the same app on the same computer at least 5 times, but yet it still keeps coming back. I would go onto the new tab, right click on the app that I want deleted and it would delete. I would then open Google Chrome again, and then that app would come back. I am not sure if there is a problem with Google Chrome or what, but it is getting really annoying.

I found a solution for deleting a section when you create new sections in the new tab page (all I know is this worked for me).
First you drag all the items in the section to another section (so that the section you want to delete is empty), then open a new tab. Granted this doesn't seem to delete sections which are between two other valid sections, and I'm willing to bet it won't delete the initial "Apps" section... but yeah.
They really SHOULD have a simple X button on a section with a "Are you sure you want to delete this section" verification prompt when you click it.
I'm running Chrome 16.0.912.63

When you change the theme/restart chrome, empty APPS sections get deleted automatically. Simply remove all the apps from the apps section and you will be through.
